Breakthrough arrived during one of the hardest periods of my life.

I gave myself one directive: a purple and yellow painting. Only those two dominant colors. Purple is my favorite color, and the combination of purple and yellow is notoriously difficult to master without oversaturating it and crossing into Lakers territory. No hate on the Lakers.

I painted her during an atmospheric river storm. I have found that painting in the rain is my favorite way to create. There is something so cathartic about the sound of rain, and the breakthrough of sun through the clouds after it cleanses everything.

Besides being an effortlessly luxurious combination, purple and yellow have a rich history in my culture. In Indian tradition, purple is called jamni, the color of royalty, spiritual authority, and divine right. Ancient Indian fine muslins were embroidered in purple and gold, textiles reserved for the highest courts. In Banaras, deep jamuni purple brocades were made specifically for bridal trousseaus and the most sacred occasions. Yellow is the color of knowledge, auspiciousness, and new beginnings — the color of turmeric, of the Haldi ceremony, of spiritual protection. In Gujarati culture, yellow is woven into the most sacred moments of life.

On this canvas they met inside a fracture. The breaking came first. Then through the breaking, the light came through.
