These works begin with memory.

Rooted in the visual architecture of Indian temples, sacred geometry, and the decorative traditions of South Asian craft, the Cultural Series is where Natasha Patel's inherited language becomes paint. Each piece starts with a reference, a mandala, a stepwell, an animal from the iconographic tradition, and is then inhabited by Liquitex acrylic ink, which brings its own will.

Select paintings feature 23k gold sourced from Thailand, applied by hand, referencing the matrilineal transmission of material culture across generations of South Asian women. These are not reproductions of tradition. They are what tradition looks like when it passes through the body of a woman who was taught one language and learned to speak in another.
